What is a Psychiatrist? 

The main difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist is that a Psychiatrist can prescribe drugs to help the patient with their problem and a Psychologist may not. 

A Psychiatrist diagnoses and treats children and adults who suffer from mental or emotional or behavioural problems. 

They need to study about all kinds of medication and what to prescribe when necessary. 

What does a Psychiatrist do?

  • meet with the patient and puts them at ease
  • wins the trust of the patient
  • asks relevant question to determine the cause of the problem
  • takes down family history
  • decides on the specific treatment for client
  • monitors the treatment and makes adjustments where necessary
  • consults to schools, agencies and the courts of law
  • keeps detailed records

How do I become a Psychiatrist? 

STEP 1 

Before you can study psychiatry, you will be required to complete a Medical Doctor’s degree and work for at least 2 years in a hospital or clinic. 

STEP 2 

Complete your Master in Medicine (Psychiatry)
