EACH bursary application is different. You MUST read each one carefully. REMEMBER hundreds of people apply for the same bursary. It’s up to you to make a good impression and beat the rest of the applications. Unfortunately, most bursary applications go straight into the bin.

The 5 reasons are:

1. You did not meet ALL the requirements! For instance, if they want Core Maths and Physical Science with 60%  – You MUST have Core Maths and Physical Science with 60%! Make sure you tick off ALL the requirements. If you don’t your application will go straight into the bin.
2. You did NOT send in ALL the right documents WITH your application!
3. Again, read carefully. Make sure you tick each one off before you attach and send.
4. You did NOT supply all the information required. Read the submission details carefully. Make sure you supply EVERYTHING they require. For instance they might ask for: your age, gender, geographic location, nationality etc. Again – tick off everything like a shopping list.
5. You supplied the WRONG personal information. Your telephone number or e-mail address was wrong. DOUBLE CHECK all your details VERY carefully. The smallest mistake could cost you!
6. Your Letter of Motivation (Cover Letter) was boring! Remember it’s a competition! You have to beat the other applicants.

The Maths and Science qualification you will need is a Level 4 course (National Senior Certificate). Generally you would need to pass Level 2, 3 and 4 before you could do either a Diploma (where any Maths or Science would be at Level 5) or a degree.

There are two options:

2. Do a Diploma which does not require Maths or Science while tackling 1.

I am interested in studying Medicine but I wondered about the service while and after you study and how long it takes. Also do they pay you?

There are three kinds of service:

• Student Internship

• Internship

• Community Service

This is what the University of Pretoria states in its faculty prospectus for 2012-13 for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB)

• Year 1 to the middle of year 5

Theoretical, practical and clinical training in the medical disciplines.

• Second half of year 5 and year 6

Student internship, during which all the clinical training takes place around patients in hospitals and clinics. After this, there are two years of internship (clinical service under supervision in accredited hospitals throughout the country), as well as another compulsory year of community service. These three years are not part of the university training.

• Involvement in community serviceThe curriculum was compiled from the viewpoint that training should take place through service delivery. In this context, the Faculty provides a comprehensive service to the broader community through several outreach programmes. Students are already involved in these programmes during their undergraduate studies.To be allowed to register as a doctor (medical practitioner), a student has to obtain the MBChB degree, followed by in-service training as an intern (general practitioner). After that, all newly qualified doctors are obliged by law to complete at least one year of community service.

PLEASE NOTE: This is different from university to university and can change from year to year.
SALARIES These are the salaries published in 2011 (There may be other conditions attached).
• Student Interns are not paid but Interns are paid R 295 989 a year for full time work

• Community Service Interns are paid 390 993 a year for full time work

I have the same problem. I thought I was not able to study in advance; but i realised I could study in advance, I would just put
it off. Procrastination is my biggest problem. Leaving studying to the last day doesn’t help much cause I was not studying, I was cramping.

After doing some self awarenesss I realised a few things.

There are a few reasons why I procrastinate:

1. Poor motivation (this is a big one) – I have little or no interest in studying because I found it boring or pointless.

2. Difficulty concentrating – I had many
things around me which is distracting. When you have to study, its really easy for anything to distract you if you not motivated.

3. Unpleasant task – Don’t like studying

4. Lack of priorities – I didnt realise or see
which tasks are most important to do.

5. Lack of confidence – I fear I won’t be able
to achieve what is expected.

What helps me to work through the procrastination?

Find the motivation – Why are am studying this specific subject? Why do I have to study? What are you hoping to achieve?

Motivate yourself by reminding yourself why you need to study.

Concentration – Find a quiet place where there’s little distraction. Research shows that most students study best in a quiet environment. If you find that playing a stereo
or TV improves your mood, keep the volume low.

Know yourself, know your concentration span and Do NOT go
over the span. Average concentration span is 40-45 mins.
Proper Planning – Prepare a study timetable. This puts you in control, and will eliminate the possibility of having to make difficult decisions under pressure. Having someone check up on me to see if i’m sticking to the timetable, helped me.

Prioritise the tasks you have to do. It’s easy to put the more difficult tasks aside and focus more on what task is more important. This is where proper planning comes hand-in –hand with prioritising, you need to know which task requires more time and effort.

Confidence – remain positive, remind yourself, what you put it is what you get out therefore the more effort you put in the better your marks will be.
