What is a Civil Engineer?

Civil Engineering is a term used to describe a large variety of activities which encompass the manufacturing and construction of things which include: the designing, planning, maintenance/servicing and management of usually very large projects/developments etc.

Civil Engineers are extremely skilled and can be found working on buildings, harbours, bridges, water supplies, roads, airports,  sewerage systems, tunnels, dams, large scale housing developments, land reclamation etc etc.

Depending on the type of work, Civil Engineers may work from quiet modern offices to remote areas in rugged terrain. The latter option may require lots of traveling from one site to another.

Here is a list of different areas Civil Engineers can work or specialise in:

  • Structural: bridges, roads, towers, tunnels
  • Transportation: roads, traffic control, airports
  • Water: dams, pipelines, purification, sewerage systems
  • Geotechnical: foundations, excavations, fills, mining and land reclamation
  • Construction: large scale construction
  • Urban: municipal services, housing & town development, maintenance
  • Railway and Harbour: railway networks, harbour facilities
  • Environmental: impact studies, social and natural environments
  • Informatics: data capturing, computers for enhancing civil engineering activities

Young Civil Engineers usually work under the supervision of an experienced engineer and will be gradually given more responsibilities as they gain experience.

  • Complete a minimum 4 year Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at a recognised SA university. Depending on the university, you can either do a Bachelor of Engineering BEng (Civ) or (BIng Civ) or Bachelor of Science (BSc Eng).

Environmental Engineers use the principles of Biology and Chemistry to provide practical solutions to problems related to the environment.

Environmental Engineers provide practical solutions to some of these problems, most significantly in the planning, design, repair and construction of public infrastructure systems such as water and sewage treatment plants, landfills, storm water and river control works.

Environmental Engineers may specialize in particular industry sectors such as the minerals industry, the chemical industry and civil engineering projects. They frequently work closely with other professionals, at times pooling expertise on particular projects. They may work in offices and/or outdoors when involved in construction projects

What is an Agricultural Engineer?

Agricultural Engineering is concerned with the environment and our natural resources.  

Agricultural Engineers use their engineering and biological science knowledge to solve agricultural problems. They usually work with automated machinery, electrification structures, soil and water conservation and mechanical processing of agricultural products etc.

Agricultural Engineers study the interaction between man-made structures and the earth’s living, and life-sustaining resources, for example: soil, water, plants, animals. 

Agricultural Engineers may specialise in one of 4 areas:

  • Conservation of Natural Resources:  

To preserve our natural resources like water and soil, they design and plan structures and safe transport systems for flood water control 

  • Energy Sources and Mechanisation:  

They research and develop new, alternative energy sources and machinery.  They also test and improve existing machinery. 

  • Irrigation and Drainage: 

Designing new, more effective drainage and irrigations systems.  They may also play a leading role in the planning and design of large state water schemes (eg hydro-electric structures) 

  • Farm Structures:  

They design and supervise the construction of animal shelters and various buildings for example:  meat, milk and egg production, storing, drying, refrigeration and processing other agricultural products, to name but a few.

Agricultural Engineers should be problem-solvers with an eye for detail, a head for technology and a heart for design.

They should have good communication skills, and enjoy working with a team of colleagues and clients alike.

Being practical and adaptable will come in useful, as things often do not go according to plan.

  • designs and directs the manufacture of equipment for land tillage and fertilization

What is an Electronics Engineer?

In the field of electricity, Engineering can be divided into two main groups:

  • Electronics Engineering:  

Usually deals with the study of small-scale electronic systems including computers and integrated circuits.  They are concerned with using electricity to transfer information using radio waves, the design of electronic circuits and computer systems and the development of control systems.

  • Electrical Engineering:  

Works with problems associated with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control circuits.  In simpler terms, they are also usually concerned with the transfer and conversion of electrical power to transmit energy.

Sometimes these two areas can merge and some Electronics Engineers cover both.  

An Electronics Engineer designs electronics. These products could be simple or be as large as an international GPS (global positioning system).

What is an Electrical Engineer?

An Electrical Engineer usually deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism.

This field can be divided into two main groups:

  • Electrical Engineering:  

Works with problems associated with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control circuits.  In simpler terms, they are also usually concerned with the transfer and conversion of electrical power to transmit energy.

  • Electronics Engineering:  

Deals solely with the study of small-scale electronic systems including computers and integrated circuits.  They are usually concerned with using electricity to transfer information using radio waves, the design of electronic circuits and computer systems and the development of control systems.

Sometimes these two areas can merge and some Electronical Engineers cover both.

  • designs, implements, maintains, and improves electronics and electrical components and circuits
  • tests, and assembles devices
  • studies articles and other publications and keeps up to date with technology
  • works on strategic planning and tracking projects

What is a Metallurgical Engineer?

Metallurgy is the science of metals and making sure the right metal is used for a job, or converting the chemical compound so it’s perfect for a job.

A Metallurgical Engineer’s main focus is the conversion of raw metal to something useful.

They often work in:

  • Steel and iron industries
  • Copper or aluminium industries
  • Jewellery manufacturing (precious metals) etc

Metallurgical Engineers may specialise in mines or manufacturing plants, or work in both.

What does a Metallurgical Engineer do?

  • travels to various sites (some remote)
  • studies the properties of metals
  • performs experiments to determine strengths and weaknesses of metals
  • changes formulas so make metals stronger and safer
  • works on mines
  • determines where mining should take place
  • oversees extraction processes
  • develops new alloys (mixtures of metals)
  • liaises with other engineers
  • establishes safety standards
