In large furniture factories about 16 different machines are used, ranging from the simplest band-saw to the most complex computer controlled spindle moulder. The woodmachinist has to set up, adjust, operate and maintain them all.
The unprepared wood is sawn into the required shapes and sizes. It is then transported to the planning machine. If the joining of wood or panels of wood is necessary, dowel pins are inserted. Details, according to design specifications, are then marked off on the wood. The next machine is then set and adjusted to obtain the required form. The wood is held
firmly in place with set apparatus.
Some of these tasks require special skills, whilst others are completed automatically by the machine.

What is a Furniture Polisher?

Furniture Polishers usually work with wood but they can also polish glass and metal objects too.

They usually work on furniture pieces but also work on things like musical instruments.

Furniture Polishers will be found working in furniture manufacturing companies (large and small), private furniture making studios as well as in furniture restoration companies.

Some Furniture Polishers use electrical machinery and others are extremely skilled hand polishers.

What does a Furniture Polisher do?

quoting
taking furniture apart and re-assembling it (removing hinges and handles)
stripping old techniques off the wood (scraping, sanding and using paint stripper)
filling holes and dents
treating wood to give it a smooth finish
mixing paints
spray painting
polishing using wax or lacquer (new and old furniture pieces)
repairing minor faults

How do I become a Furniture Polisher?

There aren’t a lot of places to furniture polishing.

Some Further Education and Training Colleges (FET) may offer programmes for specific Trade or Skills Set for would-be furniture polishers.

Saw Operator

The Forestry Saw-operator works in a plantation and is responsible for the cutting of trees
Fells trees in forests and cuts them into logs
Uses an axe, annual saw or chain-saw
Observes the tree and determines the direction in which it should fall when cut
Makes an undercut in the trunk and then a saw-cut on the opposite side to meet the undercut which causes the tree to fall in the right direction.
The sawmill saw-operator:
Works in the sawmill where felled trees are processed
Operates the following machines: band-saw, frame-saw and circular saw. It is important that both the forestry and sawmill saw-operator should be extremely cautions because of the high-risk nature of the job
