Who can apply

• Adult learners who are 21 years and older who have:
  • a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC); or
  • a Grade 9 school report (or the old standard seven). stating that they have passed Grade 9 or Standard 7; or
  • a recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level which requires two official languages.
• Adult learners who are 21 years and older with an incomplete Senior Certificate qualification.
• Adult learners who are 21 years and older with an incomplete National Senior Certificate and whose School-Based Assessment (SBA) validity has expired.
• Only in exceptional cases, out of school youth, who are 18-21 years old and who could not complete their school education due to circumstances beyond their control, as verified by the Head of Department in the Provincial Education Department.

Where to register

Learners may register at any provincial education office which includes the provincial head office, the district office or a circuit office.

Not only do they need to know the hardware and software on computers really well but they need to know how to communicate with the people they are trying to help. There are several courses which only require only Maths and English at Grade 12 level (4) and being able to use a personal computer competently.

WEB DEVELOPERS develop applications and functionality for the Internet using code like HTML5, CSS3 & JavaScript. (This is called ‘the back end.)

Most Web designers do learn a little code but for sophisticated websites you would need to train as a Developer.

Different universities have different ways of calculating this point score. (Not Universities of Technology, which have their own requirements.)

Most universities calculate the score by adding ALL the marks for all the NSC subjects. Some do not add in Life Orientation or only use half the mark. So it is important to check the Student Guides (Prospectuses) of the universities you are applying to. You can find contact details for your nearest university here:

Apart from having the right APS

• The applicant must have the required subjects for the qualification 
• Applicants with the highest APS will generally get preference
• The applicant must still write a Benchmark test

Applicants will generally calculate the point score, using Grade 11, mid-year Grade 12 or Trial results. Meeting the minimum score does, however, not guarantee a place as Universities receive more applications than they can accommodate.
