whether a private educational course
is accredited?

That is a very good thing to do. There are lots of scams!

If the course is not accredited then you could pay for it and then find employers do not recognise the course.

What a waste of time and money!

I want to apply for Medicine for 2017 but where can I study and what do I have to do? https://careerplanet.co.za/careers-listing/i-want-to-apply-for-medicine-for-2017-but-where-can-i-study-and-what-do-i-have-to-do/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=i-want-to-apply-for-medicine-for-2017-but-where-can-i-study-and-what-do-i-have-to-do Thu, 29 Nov 2018 09:00:30 +0000 http://edevstage.co.za/cp/careers-listing/i-want-to-apply-for-medicine-for-2017-but-where-can-i-study-and-what-do-i-have-to-do/ You are right in preparing now because Medicine has unusual rules and deadlines for applying. There is a lot of competition for few places, so it is a good idea to apply to more than one university and for more than one course of study. If you miss out in 2017, taking a lesser course of study may mean that if you do well, your results may provide you with a better opportunity in 2018.
  1. Make sure you know where to apply. See the list of Universities offering Health qualifications, below.
  2. Choose 3 universities in case you are not successful at the first 2.
  3. Check whether you meet the requirements. Please note: The marks given are usually the MINIMUM allowed but applicants who score higher are often the first in. There are some concessions for disadvantaged students.
  4. Find application dates and forms and complete before the deadline
  5. Register for the National Benchmark Test and make sure you write before their deadline.

Not all universities have published their 2016 closing dates for health (for 2017). We will include them in the list below as they are published. You can also find more information about the universities here:

What are faculties? https://careerplanet.co.za/careers-listing/what-are-faculties/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-are-faculties Thu, 29 Nov 2018 09:00:28 +0000 http://edevstage.co.za/cp/careers-listing/what-are-faculties/ Each institution of education divides itself into areas of learning : for example Agriculture, Art, Engineering, Science. These are called Faculties. Within each faculty they then offer certificates, diplomas and degrees. Some TVET colleges just call each set, programmes. Sometimes institutions (especially in America) call them colleges.

For example:

“Humanities” includes modern languages, literature, philosophy, religion, and musicology. Most humanities faculties also include social sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, communication studies, classical studies, law and linguistics.

Names of faculties can differ from institution to institution. In South Africa these are the names you could come across at university (below). FET Colleges may call them ‘Learning Fields’ but the divisions and names are roughly the same.

What is the National Benchmark Test? https://careerplanet.co.za/careers-listing/what-is-the-national-benchmark-test/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-is-the-national-benchmark-test Thu, 29 Nov 2018 09:00:27 +0000 http://edevstage.co.za/cp/careers-listing/what-is-the-national-benchmark-test/

A number of South African universities use the NBTs to help interpret your National Senior Certificate results. Their goal is to ensure that you will be able to cope with the demands of academic study.

Universities use the NBT results in different ways:

  • Some use them to help make decisions about your access to university. This means that your NBT results, in combination with your NSC results, are used to determine whether you are ready for academic study.
  • Some use them for placement within university. This means that the results are used to decide whether you will need extra academic support after you have been admitted to university.
  • use them to help develop curricula within their university.

Which tests must I write?

There are two tests:

  • Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy (AQL)
  • Mathematics (MAT)

The university faculty to which you are applying will determine which test you have to write, so check with them. Generally, the MAT test is reserved for those who wish to apply to courses that require Mathematics, such as Engineering and the Sciences.

What can I expect from the tests?

  • Go to the NBT web site to find out what is covered in the tests.
  • The duration of the tests is three hours.
  • The tests consist of multiple choice questions.
  • There are no past papers or special study materials to prepare for the tests. They assess the knowledge and skills that you have accumulated during your schooling.

2015 costs:

  • AQL & MAT: R160

What else do I need to know about the NBT?

  • Register online via the NBT web site.
  • Even if you register at more than one institution, you only need to write the tests once.
  • Your results will be requested by the institution to which you have applied and sent directly to them. You may also access them on the NBT web site using your registration login details.

I want to do a B.Com, but do I really need Mathematics and where can I study it? https://careerplanet.co.za/careers-listing/i-want-to-do-a-b-com-but-do-i-really-need-mathematics-and-where-can-i-study-it/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=i-want-to-do-a-b-com-but-do-i-really-need-mathematics-and-where-can-i-study-it Thu, 29 Nov 2018 09:00:27 +0000 http://edevstage.co.za/cp/careers-listing/i-want-to-do-a-b-com-but-do-i-really-need-mathematics-and-where-can-i-study-it/

A Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree gives you a wide range of managerial skills and knowledge as well as a specialization in a particular field.

The first year is often similar from university to university and covers general business principles and numerical measurement. The course focuses both on academic subjects, such as statistics or economics, as well as practical business subjects, such as accountancy, law, management and marketing.

Most of the universities require Mathematics with a minimum of 50-59%, some require a higher mark and it is best to aim for that. A few will accept a Maths Literacy mark of 60-69%. Some universities (not all) require Accounting with a mark of 60-69%

If your marks are not quite up to the required standard you can apply for an extended or lengthened course at certain Universities.

Where to do Bridging Courses? Here is a link to a list of Universities and the extended options they offer.

SPECIALISING IN SPECIFIC AREAS

From the second year, depending on the University, one can specialize in areas like

• Accounting Science*

• Auditing*

• Banking*

• Business Management

• Economics*

• Entrepreneurship

• Financial Management*

• Human Resources

• Industrial and Organisational Psychology

• Law

• Logistics

• Marketing

• Quantitative Management*

• Retail Management

• Risk Management*

• Statistics*

• Sport Management*

• Strategic Supply Management*

• Transport Economics*

• Tourism, Administration

• Business Informatics*

NOTE: * The options with the star require higher entry levels.

BACKGROUND

• The goal of business is PROFIT from engaging in COMMERCE (offering products and services) so NUMERACY (especially Accounting) is always a basic part of any Business Management course. So it is important that if you do not enjoy maths, then a Bachelor of Commerce is probably not a good choice.

• Management skills are needed in all kinds of organizations: including in government and non-profit organizations where the goals are not profit but service delivery outcomes. Many employment opportunities exist there too.

• A good thing about a Bachelor of Commerce degree is that it is recognised throughout the world. A good overview of a BCom’s international value is found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Commerce

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR TERTIARY TRAINING

Please note: Educational institutions may change or add to their requirements and it is a good idea to check the admission information on websites regularly.

School subjects and other admission requirements:

National Senior Certificate with entry level: Degree

Each institution will have its own minimum entry requirements.

Recommended

Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Information Technology, Civil Technology.

APS Scores ranges from 27 to 41, depending on the University.

Most universities also require you to do National Benchmark tests which have 3 purposes:

• To assess entry-level academic literacy and mathematics skills.

• To assess the relationship between entry-level skills and school-level exit results.

• To provide additional information to institutions requiring this for admission and placement of entry-level students. There are 3 tests: (The test you do depends on the faculty you applying to)• Academics Test,

Some FET colleges have campuses in country towns which offer these courses. They have to offer transport from surrounding areas. If you go to  https://careerplanet.co.za/get_skills and enter your Province, choose FET,  you will find the nearest college.

Remember to ask about the transport assistance they offer.

Some courses can be done via Distance education, but the more practical courses often cannot. Check out our Distance education providers here: https://careerplanet.co.za/get_skills

How can I find a good tutor to help me improve my marks?

Answer: Tutoring!

  • Many schools and Departments of Education offer tutoring to help learners to improve their marks. When you register enquire there and at your school.
  • Do a search on Google using these terms:  ‘South Africa tutors [name of your suburb or town]’ There are many of them – but be careful of predators or scamsters. Make sure you are never alone with a new tutor!

What is RPL? https://careerplanet.co.za/careers-listing/what-is-rpl/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-is-rpl Thu, 29 Nov 2018 09:00:26 +0000 http://edevstage.co.za/cp/careers-listing/what-is-rpl/ Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a way for someone who has knowledge and skills, which have been got through experience, to gain credits towards a qualification.

Through RPL, you could earn credit for a few unit standards or a full qualification. These have to be SAQA accredited. RPL recognises any relevant learning you have, whether it is from formal training, workplace experience, or general life experience.

How to go about it

  • Choose the qualification you want to apply for.
  • Contact the educational institution to find out if you can apply for recognition for your experience.
  • You will be told which unit standards are required and you then apply.
  • There is a fee for the assessment.
  • You are then assessed to show your competence.
  • At the end of the assessment, you are given credits for the learning that you have been able to show.

NOTE: Not all training institutions offer RPL. You can also approach a SETA and ask them for assistance. Click here for a list of SETAs

EXAMPLE: Imagine you have been working in a Food manufacturing environment for 5 years. You believe you know as much as the rookie with a Diploma in Supply Chain Management. One of the unit standards could be: Manage and control raw materials  (SAQA US ID 377600)

This is ONE unit standard among many in this Level 6 qualification. It is worth 25 credits. If you can show the assessor that you know how to manage and control raw materials (there are sub-criteria to this), you can achieve this sub-qualification.

Click here for the Unit Standard and all the Assessment criteria
