Student hones his skills for greater employment prospects.

Michael Wilson wanted more from life, not only for himself but also to set an example for his nephew. Getting by on a minimum wage as a factory worker with an incomplete matric, Michael decided that he needed to complete a qualification that would provide him with a much-needed national certificate.

Michael resigned from his job to pursue full-time studies at False Bay TVET College. Initially, he was unsure of what career path to follow and so he completed a career assessment provided by the College. The results revealed that Michael would do well in a career requiring analytical thinking and logic like Information Communication Technology.

Michael completed his National Certificate Vocational in Information Technology and Computer Science in 2019. Happy in his chosen career path, Michael speaks fondly about the challenging aspects of his class time, which has equipped him to be extremely efficient and helpful to his colleagues and clients. “I was truly blessed to have Mr. Magwaza as a lecturer and mentor.  He could see my potential and continued to motivate me, believing in my capabilities. Now I look forward to finding solutions to IT challenges,” says Michael. Mr. Magwaza confirmed Michael’s statement saying “I enjoyed teaching Michael Computer Programming and MMS.  His understanding of coding, dedication and originality to problem-solving made it a pleasure to teach.” Rising to the challenge, Michael is not only thriving in the ICT sector, but is also committed to specialising his skills for greater employment prospects.  He plans to obtain his Network Administrator and Comptia credentials to ensure he is prepared for the ever-changing ICT sector.

Michael applied for his post through a referral from a peer, which helped him land a position with Euphoria Telecom as a help desk technician.  His responsibilities include but are not limited to handling telephonic account enquiries for clients, assisting with onsite and remote installations, troubleshooting network/internet issues, ticket handling and change requests.

Michael advises anyone considering studying with False Bay TVET College to go for it! “Whether you’re thinking of starting over or you’re coming from high school, the lecturers are great and the atmosphere is electric. Thank you, False Bay College.”
