What is an Advertising Manager?

Advertising Managers plan and direct all areas of the advertising arena. 

It is the job of the Advertising Manager to plan and prepare advertising and promotional material to increase sales of products or services.  They work with customers, company officials, sales departments and advertising agencies.

They are also involved with advertising budgets as well as the individual budgeting of advertising campaigns.

Advertising Managers ensure that layouts, advertising copy as well as scripts for audio advertising are in line with client’s specifications.

What does an Advertising Manager do?

  • understands clien’ts brief/requirements
  • makes sure creative staff stick to the client’s brief
  • co-ordinates all the activities for each department
  • prepares and negotiates advertising and sales contracts
  • gathers and organises information to plan advertising campaigns
  • meets with other department heads and staff to discuss advertising contracts, advertising media selection or products to be advertised
  • meets with clients to provide marketing or technical advice
  • identifies new contacts and clients

How do I become an Advertising Manager?

This is will depend on the actual job advertised and what their requirements are.

Some might want a National Diploma in Journalism/Media Studies or others might require a Bachelors degree in Marketing. Some may want a PR qualification.

A background or studies in design will be extremely advantageous.
