What is a Diamond and Gemstone Setter?

Diamond and Gemstone Setters are trained and responsible artisans that specialise in working with diamonds and gemstones – usually In the jewellery industry.

What does a Diamond and Gemstone Setter do?

  • examines diamonds/gemstones – to determine the cut, flaws, and peculiarities
  • values the stones after examination
  • uses tools: polariscopes, refractometers and microscopes
  • grades gemstones and determines its stability in a ‘setting’
  • polishes the stones
  • maintains all equipment and tools
  • solders – using specialised techniques
  • keeps detailed records
  • deals with customers
