10 tips for university applications
- Choose your universities. What if you do not get into the university of your choice? Choose at least 3. Here is a link to all the public universities in South Africa.
- Download their prospectuses/student guides/handbooks so that you know all there is to know.
- Choose your courses. Most courses at university are oversubscribed, so choose at least 3 courses.
- Have a plan B. What if you do not get accepted at any university? Start exploring distance options (eg UNISA), private universities, TVET colleges, both public and private.
- Note the application deadlines. For most courses, it is 30th September, but there are some which are earlier.
- Most universities prefer you to apply online. Get familiar with the process and have all your documents at hand before you begin.
- Applying is not the same as registering. You can only register when you have been accepted.
- Explore fees and your ability to pay. Read about NSFAS nsfas.org.za.
- You need to be accepted in a course before applying for a Bursary.
- If you need accommodation, apply early.
