What is an Airport Planner?
An Airport Planner’s job has many responsibilities. They are in charge of all airport facilities including the following: the design, improvements, maintenance and expansions to buildings, runways, taxi and bus terminals, roads, cargo terminals, fuelling
areas, hangers etc.
They need to keep in mind how each section of the airport operates and then design and plan accordingly.
The design and layout must be efficient and cost effective.
They are either in responsible for large national or smaller, local airports.
What does an Airport Planner do?
- meet with government officials, environmentalists, developers, special interest groups as well as the public
- plan and design airport facilities
- create a master plan for an airport
- note increasing demands of passengers and airline services
- discuss and study developments and changes
- design and manage plans and policies
- study environmental impact studies
- review plans

How do I become an Airport Planner?
TETA Seta encourages young people who are considering a career as an Airport Planner to study a BSc in Engineering. This degree can be done at most SA universities.
Each institution has its own minimum requirements. Check with your local institution of choice for theirs. Here is a rough guide though:
Compulsory subjects: English, Mathematics and Physical Science
