A physiologist should:

* enjoy and have a good aptitude for Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry

* be curious and observant be able to work accurately, methodically and logically

* be able to concentrate well be patient and persevering

* be physically healthy and strong

* have good teamwork skills
Physiologists study a BSc degree majoring in Physiology (see some of the degrees below). To study Physiology, you need a Senior Certificate with matriculation exemption and Mathematics and Physical Science with very high marks. Biology is also a recommended matric subject. (Please make sure you know the entry requirements at the university of your choice.)

Job opportunities

Physiologists are employed by hospitals, medical schools, pathology laboratories and medical research centres, such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Medical Research Council, Chamber of Mines Human Science Laboratory, South African Defence Force Central Medical Laboratory and Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute. The Department of Agriculture and agricultural research institutes also employ physiologists. Some physiologists work at universities, as consultants to industry (industrial physiologists) or for Iscor’s Industrial Hygiene division.
