What is a Forklift Operator?
A Forklift Operate uses a powered forklift to move materials (goods) from one point to another.
He or she can work in a variety of places:
- Warehouses
- Factories
- Printing houses
- Builders’ yards
- Large retail depots
- Large courier companies
- Harbours, airports etc
Forklift Operators are responsible for the load and unloading of trucks. Some Forklift Operators are also required to keep records of incoming and outgoing goods. The may also need to check that goods are not damaged on arrival.
Forklifts are large pieces of machinery which can cause harm, even death, if not used correctly. Forklift Operators need a licence to drive a forklift.

How do I become a Forklift Operator?
You will need to get a Forklift Operating licence. TETA suggest the following:
Competency Certificate according to the classification of the equipment you will use.
- National Certificate: Lifting Machine Operators
Requirements:
NQF Level 2 in Communications and Maths Lit
- National Certificate: Lifting Machine Operations
- National Certificate: Mechanical Handling (rigging)
Requirements:
NQF Level 2 in Communications and Maths Lit
