What is a Microbiologist?

Microbiologists are scientists. They study micro-organisms. Microbiologists use their extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology and genetics to improve the quality of life of human beings.

Microbiologists usually work with organisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Some of the work that Microbiologists could do:

  • Research micro-organisms to find out how the interact with the body to cause disease
  • Work in laboratories to research and make vaccinations and antibiotics
  • Study harmful organisms in foods to decide what is safe for us to eat
  • Study harmful organisms in water to make sure our drinking water is safe
  • Study unwanted micro-organisms in chemical products which cause financial losses to compaies

They may specialise in areas, such as:

  • Medical microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Mycology
  • Virology
  • Laboratory supervision
  • Product and process control

How do I become a Microbiologist?

To start – you need to do a Bachelor of Science degree. Some universities allow you to major in Microbiology.
