A Radar Mechanic is a skilled artisan who specialises in installing, repairing and servicing radar.

The radar systems could be found in:

  • Marine craft (naval and privately owned)
  • Military (army, navy, and airforce radar)

What does a Radar Mechanic do?

  • does routine preventative care maintenance (most important part of the job)
  • installs new components, replaces old ones
  • adjusts and tests
  • reviews old maintenance records
  • keeps log books and detailed records
  • uses specialised imaging and digital diagnostic equipment for troubleshooting
  • makes sure the plane/craft etc is safe
  • keeps up to date with electronic systems etc

  • Apprenticeship
  • Trade Test

PATH 2

  • Learnership – Instrument Mechanician NQF Level 2, 3 and 4
  • Trade Test

PATH 3

  • Learnership – Electronics Manufacturing and Assembly (Logistics) NQF Level 2, 3 and 4
  • Trade Test

PATH 4

  • Learnership – Electronics Manufacturing and Assembly (Using Tools) NQF Level 3, 3 and 4
  • Trade Test

PATH 5

  • Learnership – Measurement, Control and Instrumentation Level 2, 3 and 4
  • Trade Test

PATH 6

  • National Certificate: Engineering Studies: N1, N2 and N3
  • These can be done at a lot of TVET (FET) colleges
