What is a Radiographer?

A Radiographer may also be called an X-ray Technician.

Radiographers use very sophisticated, high-tech equipment. They  X-ray the patient’s body and then send the images to the Radiologist to ‘read’ so that they can determine what treatment is required for the patient.

The Radiographer is in charge of the machinery and positioning the patient in the correct position.

Radiographers usually work in a clinical setting like a hospital.

There are four different fields of study in radiography: Diagnostic Radiography, Diagnostic Ultrasound, Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine (UJ has a detailed description of each)

What does a Radiographer do?

  • discusses the problem with the patient
  • sets up x-ray machine
  • positions patient in the right position before x-raying
  • puts the patient at ease
  • follows safety procedures
  • wears protective clothing
  • sends images to radiologist (A radiologist is a doctor who specializes in the interpretation of medical images such as MR scans, CT scans, radiographs, nuclear medicine scans, mammograms and sonograms.)
